About
The Festival of Sacred music is a joint creation of my dear friend Michael Lerner, founder and longtime president of Commonweal, and myself.
When we use the term “sacred music,” we are not speaking of liturgical or explicitly religious music; what we have in mind is music, across genres and traditions, which can delight, inspire, and elevate the soul — and which has the capacity to move listeners to the depths of their being.
A festival at its core is a celebration, an occasion for communal joy. In these divisive and polarized times when social isolation has become a virtual epidemic, these concerts are an opportunity for people to come together in a kind of sangha, a circle of conviviality, where they can meet old friends and form new connections.
I will be inviting , as our guest artists, highly accomplished musicians who are deeply in touch with the numinous dimension of reality and who know how to make an intimate connection with the audience.
The concerts will take place on or around the solstices and the equinoxes, the power points of the calendar year, when the seasons change and the when the solar energy is particularly strong.
Hope to see you at one of our upcoming events!
With very warm regards,
Toby Symington
